I'm going to complain here for a moment. Last week we had a freak 15 minute thunder/lightning/wind storm that wreaked havoc on our town. Initially 43,000 households lost power. By the next morning all but 18,000 had their power back on, by day four we must have been one of a very small number, but perhaps because our street name starts with a W we were one of the last to get power again. Not only were those four days completely hot, humid and miserable, we also lost most of the food in our fridge and freezer.

Now a few days have passed and we have a moth infestation in our pantry which is spreading to the rest of our house, the timing of this moth infestation leads us to the sure knowledge that it is a result of having our windows open 24/7 during the loss of power. So not only did we lose all of the food in our fridge and freezer, I just had the joy of throwing out any food that had been opened in our pantry, because even if it wasn't infested with moth eggs, the small chance that it was meant that none of us would have the stomach to even chance it.

Not looking forward to the grocery bill at the end of this month.

Kiva loans

Mom, Dad, Parker and Marshal, did you use your kiva loans yet? Ryan gave me one for Christmas as well and I loaned it to a young family in Cambodia. The wife is a rice farmer, the husband is a blacksmith, he makes agricultural tools. They are using the loan to stock up on steel so he can build more tools to sell. Also, they have a five year old son.

Just curious who you guys ended up loaning to?

Thank you Parker, we actually really do hope for our son to turn out as a serial killer, so I guess we'll go with the other selections. Ha ha.

so yesterday i ate a chipotle that was terrible. the guy didn't wrap it right so it fell aprt as soon as i opened it. then i accidently told the guy to put the wrong salsa in which was way to spicy. i was soo depressed, actually i am still depressed from the incident. but then we made sugar cookies and i put swastikas on them it was thoruohgly enjoyable.

Injured Deer and Good Samaritans

Tonight Ryan and I were talking about that Good Samaritan case in CA where a guy helped a woman out of a car that had been in a crash as he was worried it might light on fire, she was injured already and somehow in moving her he exacerbated it and caused her to be a paraplegic. She is now suing him. Don't you love that kind of stuff? It just makes you smile...or want to cry.

Anyway, this led to a discussion of whether or not to help someone on the side of the road with a flat tire cause they might be a serial killer or whether or not to pick up hitchhikers, which led to some really interesting/funny memories of dad and the things he has picked up off the side of the road.

I have a couple of memories of dad picking up hitchikers, but one in particular stands out. Remember that deer that we picked up off the side of the road on our road trip through CO? The deer had been hit by a car and left to die slowly and painfully, and mom and dad decided to put the deer in the car and find an animal hospital. I still think we are pretty lucky that the deer didn't go crazy and start kicking everyone and everything. How many miles did we drive with the injured deer?

This memory made me smile, I hope it does the same for you:)

so utah is ridiculously dry. i have never gotten a bloody nose my whole life, until this very morning. i was sleeping when all of the sudden my cheek was wet. i figured i had a runny nose. i sucked it up , but it kept coming out. then i woke up and i had a big red puddle all over my bed, so i got up and ran to the sink and it sprayed all over the sink it was disgusting. although it wasn't enjoyable it was quite a sensation.

Christmas Betrayal

I had a random memory earlier today at work that literally brought me to tears of laughter as I described it to a co-worker.

I don't remember exactly how old Parker was, but I know that it was toward the end of high school for me. Parker found out, I believe Marshal perhaps told him, that Santa Claus wasn't real. Madness ensued. I remember how betrayed Parker felt and how angry he was with all of us. We happened to be going to our ward Christmas party that night, at some point little Parker ran out into the parking lot yelling at the top of his lungs something about how it was all lies!

I can't remember the details more clearly than that, I was hoping some of you could help me out. But man, that has to be one of my favorite memories of Parker. I think he was so outraged by the injustice of it all, which might have been a precursor to his vegetarianism and other inclinations towards justice for all.

I love my family so much!

The Second Snag

(i wrote this memoir for my english class and i thought you all might appreciate reading it)
It was a cold fall morning, a brisk, breeze swept through the small forest of scrub oaks. The tall pine tree that erupted from the middle was seemingly unfazed by the breeze, or the coming winter it clung to the needles of its branches like life itself. Meanwhile the scrub oaks shed the unwanted leaves with every breath of wind that came its way.
The crunching of the leaves beneath my feet kept me on edge. I urged my legs to carry me to the grand pine that had long haunted my dreams. My older brother had braved its timbers many times, and had built a tree fort that any boy would envy. Numerous times I had asked and been denied access to his safe haven. It was early morning and I had been careful to not awaken any members of my family, no one would deny me access to the fort this morning. I made my way to the base of the tree and looked up to see the journey that had tickled my brain for what seemed to be ages.
I jump and fell short of the lowest branch. A strained frown crept onto my face. The first snag of my journey had appeared so early on, the discouragement shot through my legs, I made a desperate leap for the branch. The discouragement fled and was replaced with a sweet feeling of ecstasy as my fingers wrapped around the lowest reaching limb. I pulled my torso level with the branch swung my left leg over. I gathered my balance and looked down to see what I had accomplished. It was meager compared to what I must yet traverse to find myself in the fort.
I slowly and carefully made my way up the branches closer and closer to the fort that no longer seemed a distant dream of a young boy, but the a reality that would soon be his. Impatience took a grip on me I was tired of the arduous climbing, and longed to taste the succor of my objective. It was in this moment of weakness that the poor judgment of a six year old became a dangerous thing. I saw a shortcut…directly above me was a branch that if I leaped for would cut my journey into a quarter of what it was to be. I reasoned with myself that if I did not make it, my feet would land safely on the branch again, and all would be well.
The wait was over, my confidence swelled, I made a desperate leap. Ecstasy did not find me, nor did the branch find my fingers. I prepared to land on the limb that I had jumped from, any second now I would be safe on it again. I was wrong, the branch I had planned to land on swept past my vision, my hands brushed it. My time had come I thought to myself, fear engulfed my very being I couldn’t utter a sound this was it, I was sure.
The gut wrenching fall seemed to never end, and when it did I was afraid to open my eyes. I waited for the pains of death to consume my body and leave me in utter agony until the angel of death came to take me away. But there was no pain. Is this what death felt like I pondered to myself. I gathered all the courage I could muster and opened my eyes. I was in the air ten feet from the ground, I had heard about out of body experiences, I surveyed the ground for my bloodied corpse to no avail. I had reached the second snag in my journey. My pants had caught on a branch. Relief swept over me like a cool breeze, relaxing me.
I shouted for someone to rescue me, a short while later my older brother emerged from the scrub oaks and chortled to himself. He left me alone and ran back through the forest to our home. He returned with my family, they all laughed at my predicament and took pictures. A while later they extracted me from the branch. I had learned a valuable lesson. All shortcuts have costs, this time I was grateful for such a snag.

Aloha family!!!! Ryan thank you so much for putting those pictures up....it gave all of us a really good laugh, and boy did we need one. We have been having a blast while Vanessa and Greg and the kids have been around and it has been great. We love playing with the kids and it is just always so nice to have family around. Also, in the last week our family has become avid wake surfers and really enjoy this sport...so once Dad and Mom buy their boat we will be able to take all of you out too and teach ya how. Anyway, I hope everyone has a great Sabbath day and we love you so much! I'm totally bored at work right now due to a "summer slump", so I'll see what I can write.

I'm at a point now where I am actually enjoying pregnancy. I haven't thrown up in over a week now, what an accomplishment! The best part about it so far is that being pregnant actually stabilizes me emotionally (other than the fact that I cry easier). I'm just not nearly as moody as usual, I'm pretty excited about that, cause the emotional rollercoaster that I normally ride is my least favorite thing about my personality.

I had a doctors appointment yesterday, and the baby's heartbeat is still good and healthy. I haven't gained any weight so far. But the weight has redistributed itself, I am much thicker in the belly. I went to Target last night and bought my first maternity clothes, I am totally digging the stretchy belly area in pants, so comfortable! Why don't we always dress this way?

Ryan is kind of bored and ready for summer to be over. He is training for a relay that he'll be doing in September, its about 500 miles, of which Ryan will be running 110 over three days. Okay, its actually way less than that, but he's still a stud.

Roxy got a haircut yesterday and looks super cute. She is still pretty much the sweetest, cutest dog alive. Parker, if you want to challenge that assertion, it means you will actually have to post on the blog.

For anyone who remembers the picture of our back yard, you will remember that it didn't look like much...well after a couple weeks of breaking my back I've re-landscaped it all by my lonesome! There's still some flowers or vegetables to plant in the planter box behind the patio, but its basically done! Here's the before and after...

We're Still Alive!

Sorry everyone, I didn't know that the family blog was so alive and well, I had quit checking it since it wasn't being used there for a while. So Emily and I went to Disneyland on Tuesday for our 2nd anniversary, it was my first time in a long time but thankfully Emily is a pro! She doesn't need a map or anything, she just knows where everything is! It was really hot and crowded and I think I got so exhausted from standing in long lines that we had to take a break on my behalf and went to see Indiana Jones during the hottest part of the day. The best part of the day (besides being with Emily) was the fireworks at the end of the night, amazing!

So things have calmed down a lot at work since we're in between projects and everyone is gone but me. I still have some small things to do every now and then for Rupert, but I am also getting to do some of my own stuff now. I am scoring a short film for a friend in our ward that I am really excited about. Musically it's going to be Lost meets Crash, well at least for now.

Emily has been interviewing like crazy and got a great job offer yesterday for a PR firm here in Santa Monica. So by the end of today she will most likely be employed. It is owned by a woman and run by women, I think of the 40 employees there are only 4 guys, don't know if they're straight or not. Anyway, they absolutely love Emily and really want her, it's nice to be needed.

Today is my second to last day of college classes. This is exciting i get to run the half mile today. So that should be fun. I dropped 3% on my healthy body percentage thing. So that is excited. First of all, congrats Marshal! Losing a midget is no small feet, no pun intended. However, I think it would be more accurate to say you lost a runway model. Also, the reason we havn't posted pictures yet was it wasn't till last week that I finished all the painting in the house, and our kitchen is a construction zone until wednesday. We'll take pictures once that's done. I'll post more sometime, but I gotta get to the lab.

We've been having some insane weather out here lately. Last week we had some tornadoes and lost our power for a day, then we had an insane heat wave, can you say 101 degrees with 85% humidity? Thanks heavens we have A/C! Last night Ryan and I were out running some errands after work, we headed home around 8:30 and the skies were perfectly clear, within 5 minutes we were being pummeled by huge sheets of rain and the streets were almost flooding. On top of that there was crazy scary lightning all along the way. You know, the kind that you hear the thunder at the same time that you see the light? Yeah, that close. And I learned something about myself, I have an INTENSE fear of lightning. I mean, it stands to reason considering our families experience with lightning. But I guess I always thought the way I reacted to it was normal. You know, my fists automatically tighten, my heart rate jumps. Last night was pretty bad. When we got to our house I was too scared to go from the car to the house. It took me a few minutes to gather myself before making a mad dash in, almost crying the whole way. And through all of this? Ryan isn't even phased. So yeah, add that to my list of phobias.

Buna Ziua Familiile mea!!!! That is Hello my Family in Romanian. Marshal....go-carting and skittles, well you sound like you are just having an awesome time! and CONGRATULATIONS on losing a midget, that is quite an accomplishment! Rachel, I am glad to hear the nausea is slowing down and Ryan is being so good to you!! I love you guys, thanks for still posting on the blog. As for me, I have just been so busy in school that I am sorry I have not had time to post on the blog but if you all got the family e-mail from the other day you were able to see that I am still putting aside time to have a lot of fun! Rachel I miss having you as my work out buddy, I barely ever go anymore because it just is not as fun alone. But last night I went with Brittany and her huge African Boyfriend, who played the role as our personal trainer last night. Well, let me just say it is a miracle I can walk today after everything he put me through last night! haha but it definitely taught me about what I need to start doing in my work outs again. RandR Update

So things out here have been pretty fun lately. With Ryan out of school for the summer, he actually has time to hang out with me which I love. Ryan is doing research this summer on a potential vaccine for hookworm in Brazil, but he doesn't work full days so he's been getting a lot done around the house and yard. As Emily requested, we really will post pictures soon, I'm setting a deadline from myself of this coming Sunday!

We've been on some nice bike rides and walks together down by the Potomac, we've seen some good movies (loved Prince Caspian even though I didn't like the first Narnia), eaten some good food when my stomach decides to let me, and reconnected with some old friends. Many of you remember Rich who was Christian and Ryan's roomate at BYU. He and his wife moved out here a couple of weeks ago and its been fun to hang out with them.

I am still a sicky, although I can tell that the nauseau is fading, its not nearly as constant as it used to be. Ryan is being wonderful to me and picking up all of my slack around the house. He is also indulging me in my whininess about the nauseau. I know it must be annoying but he always listens with a sympathetic ear.
